How many facilities do I need to provide?

You must provide flushing toilets and running water connected to the mains water and drainage systems. If this is not possible, facilities with built-in water supplies and drainage tanks should be used. Portable chemical toilets are only acceptable if it is not reasonably practicable to make other provisions.

Toilets must be adequately ventilated, well-lit, and maintained in a clean condition, with the frequency of cleaning depending on usage.

The number of toilets required on your site will depend on the number of workers. Men and women may use the same toilet if it is in a lockable room and partitioned from any urinals. Otherwise, you will need to provide separate toilets. The table below shows the minimum number of toilets and washbasins that should be provided:

3+1: Three male WCs, urinals and sinks, plus one female WC with sink.

5+1: Five male WCs, urinals and sinks, plus one female WC with sink.

6+1: Six male WCs, urinals and sinks, plus one female WC with sink.

Standalone DDA-compliant WC: Fully accessible unit designed to meet disability access requirements

Alternative Options:

Ambulant WC: Designed for those with limited mobility

DDA: Enhanced accessibility features in compliance with disability standards

Multi-Faith Toilet: A culturally sensitive solution to accommodate diverse requirements
